A new perspective on life

In 2023 and 2024, I had the opportunity to go to the U.S. with Work and Travel alongside my friends. My American dream started to take shape in December 2022 when my friend placed the Student Travel contract in front of me and said, “Don’t read it, I already did. I’ll just tell you where to sign.” From that moment on, it was a rollercoaster of questions: How do I tell my parents? Where do we get the money? Where will we work? How do we pass the interview? But we took it step by step, and by June, I had my bags packed (somehow managing to squeeze my whole life into 30 kg) and was ready for the adventure.

The highlight of the experience was the journey

I can say with complete honesty that the Work and Travel program has been the experience of a lifetime. I met real cowboys, attended authentic rodeos, and had the chance to connect with people from countries like Ukraine, Taiwan, Argentina, Colombia, the Philippines, and Turkey.

But the highlight of the experience was the solo road trip I took afterward in a rented car. My journey included Salt Lake City—Arches National Park—Bryce Canyon—Zion National Park—Monument Valley—Secret Antelope Canyon—Horseshoe Bend—Grand Canyon—Sedona—Arizona—Tombstone.

I would do it all over again.

I spent two summers in the U.S.—the first in Ohio as a housekeeper and the second in Colorado as a server. Though vastly different, both experiences were incredible, from the people and culture to the food and fun. My favorite part was the travel at the end of the summer. I went on a road trip, visited major cities, and explored amazing places like New York, Miami, San Francisco, Valley of Fire, and Niagara Falls.

I would relive these experiences in a heartbeat. My only regret is waiting until my third year of university to join the program instead of doing it sooner. I highly recommend Work & Travel to anyone who wants to explore new places, step out of their comfort zone, become independent, and connect with people from different cultures.

A 23kg Suitcase

A summer on the American continent, friends from all corners of the world, overcoming the fear of the unknown, stepping out of your comfort zone, unforgettable memories from places you’ve only seen in movies, and a few magnets—you pack them all into a 23kg suitcase and wonder if last summer was just a dream. I think I speak for the entire Work & Travel community when I say this is how every student returns from the U.S.

I spent two summers in the U.S. (in Park City, Utah, and Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin) and could talk about them for days. My only regret? Not going even more times.
